A Lumpkin County teacher who choked and body slammed a student is justified in his actions. The educator and part-time disciplinarian, 61-year-old Tim Garner, is a teacher at Lumpkin County Alternative School. The key phrase being alternative school. An alternative school is a school for all the deplorables that other schools won’t accept. These deplorables are hoodlums, violent bangers, and often come from homes where the parent(s) have given up or just don’t care. It is a last chance for a substandard education and high school diploma.
Garner is being charged with “child cruelty and simple battery,” after grabbing a student by the throat before throwing him down and dragging him along a table. The entire incident was a result of the victim and two other students messing around with a styrofoam try before Garner asked them to leave the cafeteria. As the student was leaving the room, Garner told WSB-TV Atlanta that he felt he was in danger.
He didn’t say anything until he put his hand on me and when he did that, I reacted. He was right up on me and when he did that. The next thing, I just wanted to control his hitting hand. He’s right hand dominant and that’s all he hits with. I’ve never seen him throw a punch with his left hand.
Garner justified his actions saying:
“I was in fear of a head-butt or something like that or carrying something,” Garner claimed.
The student in question reportedly was a “troubled teen with a violent past.”
The student’s attorney refuted the claims of the Lumpkin County teacher.
Coach Garner’s assertions that my client is a troubled and violent youth is absurd, as is the assertion that my client initiated any contact with him. The truth of the matter, as the video clearly shows, is that Coach Garner decided to subdue and choke a child for almost 50 seconds as a method of exercising discretionary discipline for a minor infraction in the lunchroom. We expect Coach Garner to be held accountable and take responsibility for his lapse in judgment, and for the School District to do the right thing in settling the civil claims that will follow the criminal prosecution.
But the student was at an alternative school. The alternative school only serves one purpose and that is babysitting the students other public schools have kicked out. If this student was a model student, he wouldn’t have been at that school. The same way they say that if victims of police violence just comply they wouldn’t be victims. If the student complied with an order given by a person in authority, this wouldn’t have even made the news. Quite frankly, the only people raising a stink about this incident are people who don’t have to deal with violent underaged vagabonds on a daily basis… and that is NOT in a teacher’s job description. This white-on-white violence should be shrugged off, charges dismissed, and the Lumpkin County teacher reinstated.
