Let’s just get right to it. It’s been a minute since I’ve done one of these stories and there’s no better time like the present to address the pachyderm in the room. Thursday afternoon, initial news reports went out claiming that witness saw a woman throw a child off a bridge in Tampa. No description of the woman was given. No description of the child was given. It was breaking news.
A police dive team was called out to the Hillsborough River and immediately sprang into action searching for the child. At 4:30 p.m., “a dive team member discovered an unconscious child submerged about 75 feet off shore near N. Rome Avenue and W. Aileen St.,” the police news release says. The 4-year-old child was rushed to the hospital but was pronounced deceased 19 minutes later. She was identified as Je’Hyrah Daniels.
The woman seen tossing the child was identified as 26-year-old Shakayla Denson, the child’s mother. A canvassing of witnesses revealed that Denson did not throw the child off the bridge. She actually waded halfway into the river before tossing the child. Police say they “quickly located the woman suspected of tossing the child in the water. She was walking nearby and was taken into custody.” She waded out of the river but she did not stray far from the scene.
Authorities say Denson first stole a car from a local auto shop and then drove to the water with her daughter. Denson stole a car – a grey Nissan Altima” from a local auto repair shop, parked the car, and then “waded into the Hillsborough River with her child.
Denson, who goes by Kayla Denson on both of her Facebook pages, reportedly was dressed in a bra and seaweed or grass-covered leggings a waitress told the Tampa Bay Times. She was also allegedly carrying a Bible with her when she sacrificed her daughter. Business owner Eddie Camacho told reporters that he “saw a woman run up Fremont Avenue wearing only a bra and black pants and no shoes.” According to Osama Jamil, an employee, Denson was behaving oddly in a back storage area of the business.
She was “washing her face. She was counting out loud, 19, 20, 21. I went back there to see if she was all right. She didn’t look right,” he alleged, saying she then ran away.
Denson alleges to have worked at WellCare Health Plans in Tampa but the company has not confirmed her employment. She also said she worked as an Enrollment Specialist at The Results Companies – Blue Bell. On her Facebook page she stated she studied as a “Registered Nurse at Hillsborough Community College” and lives in Tampa, Florida and was from Tampa, Florida.
Despite her alleged involvement in the healthcare field, Denson has racked up quite the criminal history in Tampa. Her history includes arrests for theft as well as criminal traffic offenses. The theft case dated to 2016 and was a second-degree misdemeanor. Her traffic offense includes driving with a suspended license.
She also referred to herself on her Facebook page as “just a child of god, a growing women finding her way😇.”
Denson started a GoFundMe campaign for her daughter nine months ago after being diagnosed as autistic. The campaign titled, “Life with je’hyrah” read:
“My daughter was recently diagnose with autism spectrum, my goal is to start saving for therapy equipment, and also for je’hyrah’s future. I’ve also gathered interest in reaching out to others living with autism, and would enjoy providing strategies and resources I’ve learn to help them get threw the day. Thanks and i appreciate it.”
Denson’s target goal was $1,500. The campaign received no donations despite her pleas for help.
Denson is facing charges of first-degree felony murder, aggravated child abuse, and grand theft auto.
Now I could make it a racial thing what happened to this poor little girl at the hands of this selfless black queen BUT it is not a racial thing. Plenty of white women are murdering their kids and selling them off as sex toys. Case in point, Andrea Yates. Yates is a former resident of Houston, Texas, who confessed to drowning her five children in their bathtub on June 20, 2001. And then there’s the case of Casey Anthony. She killed her 2-year-old daughter and charged with first-degree murder in October 2008 and pleaded not guilty.
It’s not a black versus white thing. It is, however, a woman thing. Women are disproportionately killing off their “blessings” more than men. That is not to say that men don’t do it. It happens. But more women do it at a higher frequency. Not only are women doing it more, women are also being afforded the benefit of the doubt in most cases while there is a rush to judgement in the case of men.
So what excuse will they offer up for Denson? Will they say mental health issues? Some would argue that she had to have some mental issues to do what she did in the manner that she did it. Could it be though, that Denson thought worst case scenario, a life behind bars beats a life imprisoned to the care of Je’Hyrah. Ironically, Denson offered up advice on GoFundMe on how to deal with a child with autism. I guess the final step in her 12-step-process is to off the child like she did. And the fact that she had a Bible with her when she did it! May God have mercy on who’s soul… Shakayla or Je’Hyrah?
I get that she may feel overwhelmed and that her life sucks. I get that you tried to get free money from people on GoFundMe while still rocking hundred dollar weaves and flexing online. Spending other people’s money is always better than spending your own. I understand that you’re black and are already looked at different and have a checkered past because of your poor choices. I get it. What I don’t get is you placing that burden or guilt on your daughter. People online have suggested putting the child up for adoption. That is definitely a much better decision than offing your seed… but like Reese says, the Terminatrix can’t be reasoned or bargained with. It doesn’t feel pity, remorse, or fear and it absolutely will not stop… ever… until you are dead!
So, yeah another black woman did a horrible thing and drowned her blessings. Maybe she asked God to fill her cup and her cup overfloweth to the point she didn’t know what else to do. But the same way she can call herself a child of God and such she can remember the popular saying that God will not put more on you than you can bear. By that logic, Shakayla Denson punked out and failed her daughter, herself, and God… but His grace and mercy endureth forever… right?
What do you think should happen to Denson?
