MIAMI – A Florida police chief has exploited the “criminal” stigma that surrounds African Americans by framing one such youth for crimes that he knew he didn’t commit. Not only did this police chief intentionally and knowingly set up this teen to take the fall, two other “good cops” helped him do it. The Feds have begrudgingly revealed this information stating that the reason for such an egregious miscarriage of justice is that the local police department was trying to maintain their perfect record for burglaries solved.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office released a statement charging Biscayne Park Police Chief Raimundo Atesiano and Officers Charlie Dayoub and Raul Fernandez with conspiracy to violate civil rights under color of law and deprivation of civil rights Monday. All three face up to 11 years in federal prison if convicted.
According to the indictment, Chief Atesiano ordered Fernandez and Dayoub to arrest the 16-year-old back in June of 2013 in order to fraudulently claim a 100% clearance rate of reported burglaries. Atesiano is alleged to have even bragged about the perfect clearance record at the local city council meeting.
The juvenile, only identified as T.D., was placed on the hook for four unsolved burglaries. Instead of diligent detective work to find the real culprit, Johnny Law helped create yet another career criminal. No evidence was obtained or found to support charging the teen but the teen still ended up with the experience of imprisonment and indoctrination emblazoned in his consciousness.
This act has come to light some five years later… but what about the acts committed by these bad apples that still remain in the dark? Not only should all cases handled by Fernandez and Dayoub be scrubbed with a fine tooth comb for improprieties, but everything case the chief has signed off on should be investigated as well. Every case in that police department in fact should be reviewed for discrepancies since the top brass has displayed a propensity for cutting corners regardless of who is effected. Not only should these officers face criminal charges but a civil rights suit should follow. The department should be scrapped and rebuilt from the ground up. More training is not in order… more accountability is.
Black people aren’t inherently guilty of a crime just off the color of their skin. It’s about time people stop scapegoating black people.
