Indiana City Councilman Jeff Miller was arrested Friday after being charged with child molestation. Miller is facing three counts of felony child molestation according to court records. The charges against the councilman come after police searched his home last month following up accusations brought up by the parents of one of the victims.
The 50-year-old councilman is being accused of fondling two little girls at his residence, one of whom was just 10-years-old. One little girl told detectives in October that she told her parents what happened because “they were watching the news about the famous guy that directs Broadway things and how he has been doing things like this,” according to WISH-TV. After the Weinstein story broke, the girl felt bad that she didn’t come forward about her encounter with Miller and was compelled to say something.
The other little girl told detectives that Miller did “bad touch” to her inside his home while she was there playing a computer game. According to the little girl, Miller came up to her and began to massage her. She made an attempt to wiggle away but Miller persisted. The councilman is also accused of touching the little girl’s butt and massaging her thigh area. It apparently was very commonplace because the little girl said that the thigh massages were “pretty normal for them to do.”
After the charges were announced, Miller resigned from his chairman position. Marion County Republican Chairman Jim Merritt and Republican Minority Leader Michael McQuillen asked him to resign in light of the revelations. According to WTHR, the councilman’s friends and family came to his support stating that he had never done anything wrong prior to the announcement of the charges filed against him.
When asked about the allegations Miller did not outright refute the claims and say that the little girls were lying. Instead Miller said that he did not believe that the girls “would say something that they don’t believe.”
“Wow,” Miller reportedly said when told that the child perceived the massages as sexual. “You know, and I’m not, I’m not debating that. I’m not gonna…that’s, that’s how she felt. I’m, I’m fine with that. Not fine with the situation. I’m saying that’s how she felt. Period. I mean…yeah, nothing more to say other than that. Feel like an idiot. Desperately sorry and, um, that’s, that’s her right. And that can’t be taken away from her. That’s how she feels.”
Miller was booked into Marion County Jail on $10,000 bond. His attorney, Jennifer Lukemeyer, did not offer any comments on the charges against the former councilman.
